UPDATE: 13-year-old Boy Shot in Humboldt Park
UPDATE: The shooting of Isaiah Mendez, of the 1400 block of North Kedzie Avenue, was initially being considered a homicide, but this morning, law enforcement said the shooting also appeared to be an accident. The boy and two other teens were reportedly hanging out on the back porch of a two-story home in the Humboldt Park neighborhood Tuesday afternoon when one of the boys started playing with a handgun.
The shooting happened about 2:30 p.m. at the 3400 block of West Beach Avenue in Humboldt Park on Tuesday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. , police News Affairs Officer Daniel O’Brien said. Mendez was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died at 3:25 p.m., the M.E.‘s office said.
Police were questioning witnesses at the scene, but so far, no one is in custody for the shooting.
Isaiah reportedly struggled with a learning disability and “had the mentality of an 8-year-old,” his aunt said, also adding that his mother worked hard to get him the attention he needed in school.

Fire Department emergency crews responded to the scene and took the boy to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious-to-critical condition, Fire Department spokesman Richard Rosado said.
The boy, who suffered a gunshot wound to the head from a large-caliber gun, was later declared dead at the hospital, another Fire Department spokesman said.
