While Republican Senator Marco Rubio is attempting to slow down the momentum on comprehensive immigration reform, Chicago business leaders are uniting to push for its passage.
This morning in a prepared statement Rubio said “reports that the bipartisan group of eight senators have agreed on a legislative proposal are premature.” At the same time he called for public hearings to ensure transparency.
Meanwhile, Chicago business leaders are joining forces to push for the passage of comprehensive immigration legislation. The Illinois Business Immigration Coalition, which is endorsed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, includes leaders from Caterpillar and Motorola, numerous trade groups and immigrant advocate groups.
The coalition wants to recruit 300 CEO’s and 1,000 small businesses in Illinois to push Washington for a bipartisan immigration bill.
Business leaders are having trouble filling high and low skills jobs in Illinois and feel passage of comprehensive immigration reform could help the situation.
Mayor Emanuel noted at this morning’s kick-off event “it’s a huge opportunity that shouldn’t be squandered because of politics.”
