The Senate Judiciary Committee is currently debating amendments to the “Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013” (S. 744). As the committee considers the section of the bill that addresses interior immigration enforcement, we have gotten news that certain harmful amendments could be voted on as soon as today!
Below are a few amendments that impact all workers and restrict the ability of people to earn their citizenship. Please call your senators and tell them to vote as explained below. Click here to call and be patched through to your senator now!
Vote NO on Grassley 18. This amendment would have a chilling effect on individuals eligible to apply for Registered Provisional Immigrant (RPI) status by requiring that they disclose all Social Security numbers they have ever worked under. This is unworkable and would keep many immigrant workers in the shadows.
Vote NO on Grassley 13. This amendment would make it more difficult for people to earn legal status by limiting their ability to prove their work history.
Vote NO on Grassley 32. This amendment would allow employers to use the employer verification system on current employees, not just for new hires, allowing employers to use E-Verify to intimidate workers who stand up for their rights on the job.
Vote NO on Hatch 18 and Lee 15. These amendments would make it more difficult for victims of employment discrimination to get relief.
Vote NO on Grassley 30. This amendments would deter individuals from coming forward to obtain legal status and would keep the underground economy thriving.
We need your help today to ensure that we produce the best possible bill for our community.
