Current Argentine President Cristina Fernandez Kirchner has won re-election in a landslide victory against six other rivals today making her the first female to be re-elected as president in Latin America.
Regardless of the history Kirchner, 58, is making and the landslide win the victory is also bittersweet since this is her first win without her husband and predecessor, Nestor Kirchner who died last year, at her side. Though Kirchner has many detractors the economic growth the country is enjoying was hard to argue with, garnering her over 50 percent of the votes. The country’s economy grew at an annual average of 7.6 percent over the past eight years
The actual margin of victory for Kirchner was 54% to 55% making it the widest victory margin for any Argentine president.
Nearly all the registered voters voted, approximately 29 million people, since voting is mandatory in the country. Kirchner will start her next four year term when she is inaugurated on December 10th.
