Pennsylvania Lawmakers Consider Tough Immigration Laws

Pennsylvania lawmakers have proposed bills that would add to the various of immigration laws around the nation.

They include:

HB 858 - Requires state contractors to check the immigration status of employees through the federal E-Verify program.

HB 799 - Provides for state police to enforce federal immigration laws while performing authorized duties after they receive training.

HB 798 - Instructs police to check the immigration status of people placed under arrest.

HB 809 and HB 41 - Checks the immigration status of people applying for public welfare benefits.

HB 355 - Prohibits the harboring or transporting of illegal immigrants.

HB 810 - Withholds state funding for so-called sanctuary cities that prohibit or discourage police and other employees from disclosing information about illegal immigrants to the federal government.

HB 865 - Makes sanctuary cities responsible for damages caused by illegal immigrants during the commission of a crime.

HB 801 - Allows individuals to sue municipalities to reverse sanctuary policies.

Not all bills introduced become law. A study by the Migration Policy Institute found 16 percent of the 1,059 immigration bills introduced by states in 2007 became law.
