The Empire State Building lit up in the colors of the Mexican flag on Sunday night to mark the “Grito de Dolores,” the rallying cry that launched Mexico’s war of independence on Sept. 16, 1810.

The iconic skyscraper will be dressed in red, white and green to celebrate Mexico’s independence day in a city that some 350,000 Mexicans and Mexican-Americans call home.

New York also hosted the “Celebrate Mexico Now” cultural festival, which was graced by the presence of Mexican writer Elena Poniatowska.

The New York City Council issued a proclamation last Thursday honoring Mexicans and Mexican-Americans for their contributions to the Big Apple.

Mexico’s consul general in New York, Sandra Fuentes-Berain, will ring the opening bell on Monday at the electronic Nasdaq market, whose screens on Times Square will show the flag’s colors and stream videos on Mexico.
