The Puerto Rican town of Mayaguez is organizing this weekend its first culinary festival in which some 80 gastronomic experts will take part, including some of the best-known chefs and restaurants on the island.

The 2014 Mayaguez Culinary Fest, to be held as a benefit for the American Cancer Society, will take place in the western coastal city Saturday at the seaside recreational complex known as Paseo del Litoral Israel “Shorty” Castro.

The event will feature live music, a fashion show, two stages for entertainment and awards ceremonies, plus tasting sessions of dishes prepared by restaurants, universities, hotels and culinary schools.

“The island has become an excellent gastronomic destination and our region is no exception, which is why we can promote seriously good cooking and healthy entertainment,” Roberto Rivera, promoter of the event, said in a communique.
