Photo: Caravan of Peace Kicks off in Mexico
Civil disobedience is not out of order and a ‘legitimate’ response to the unprecedented drug-related violence in Mexico says Mexican poet Javier Sicilia. Sicilia also happens to be the father of slain student Juan Francisco that was a random victim of violence in Cuernavaca. His tortured body was found in a car along with five other victims.
The poet is now on a anti-violence crusade and has organized the first caravan of peace that will visit at least eight Mexican states including Ciudad Juarez, by the time it is all done. The caravan includes 14 buses and 30 cars and kicked off Saturday in Cuernavaca. Sicilia planned this unprecedented effort after a very successful anti-violence march on May 8th in Mexico City - thousands upon thousands showed up to march.
Sicilia says this is not a anti-government initiative but a statement against the way government is run and done in the name of the 35,000 people that have died from drug-related violence.
