In Waterloo, Iowa, a young man has been arrested after attempting to exchange roughly $900 in stolen quarters for cash.
The more than 3,600 quarters were reportedly stolen from a Guppies on the Go car wash in Waterloo. The theft, which was caught by the establishment’s video security system, occurred on August 12. The owner called the police and gave them the security footage.
Carlos Rios, 18, was arrested earlier this month after police received a call from a Walmart in Cedar Falls reporting that three people came in to cash hundreds of dollars in quarters.
Rios was identified and taken to Black Hawk County Jail. He claimed he was not involved in the theft at Guppies but admitted to cashing in the coins. When officers searched his home they found clothing similar to the clothing worn by the thief seen in the surveillance video.
He remains in jail on $9,500 bail, and has been charged with third-degree burglary.
