The Los Angeles City Council voted overwhelmingly in support of legislation that would allow them to opt out of Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Secure Communities Program.
The program has come under criticism for leading to the deportation of those who were either arrested but not subsequently convicted of a crime or convicted of misdemeanors or infractions, such as a traffic violation.
The program was touted initially as a means to help identify and deport illegal immigrants convicted of serious crimes.
The resolution passed 11-1.
