Chilean international Antonio “Junior” Fernandes, who plays professionally for Dinamo Zagreb, had surgery for a broken leg and will not be able to compete for his country in the 2014 World Cup, Croatian daily Jutarnji List said Friday.
“The operation was carried out with success. Recovery from this type of injury tends to take months,” Dinamo club physician Ivica Smodek told the newspaper.
The forward is not expected to return to action before autumn, the daily said.
Fernandes suffered a broken leg Wednesday when Dario Rugasevic tackled him during Dinamo’s 3-0 victory over RNK Split.
“I didn’t want to hurt him. I brought him down, and his leg got stuck beneath me. I regret very much that he is missing the World Cup, I really regret it,” Rugasevic said after learning of the severity of Fernandes’ injury.
The tourney begins in June in Brazil.
Chile is in Group B along with Australia, defending World Cup champion Spain and the Netherlands, a perennial contender.
