Photo: HONDURAS: Deputy Mayor of La Masica Shot, Killed
The deputy mayor of the Caribbean coastal town of La Masica was fatally shot on Tuesday, a Honduran police source told Efe.
Marcos Leveron, 55, was “attacked with gunfire” by armed men who entered his residence early Tuesday morning, a police officer in La Masica said without providing more details on the incident.
So far, security forces investigating the murder have not determined the motive.
Since 2009, seven mayors and three mayoral candidates have died violently in Honduras.
Honduras suffered 85.5 homicides for every 100,000 residents in 2012, compared with a global median rate of 8.8 murders per 100,000, the Violence Observatory at the National Autonomous University said in a study released in February.
