Photo: Once Homeless, Samatha Garvey Gets $50k Scholarship From Ellen and MORE
Though Samantha Garvey and her family were homeless just days ago, her intelligence and fight for a brighter future has brought the Garvey family more than could have imagined.
After hearing the story of the high school student who was named an Intel talent search semifinalist, many rushed to aid this bright girl and her family.
Her family was given with a new home earlier this month and on Thursday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she was presented with a $50,000 scholarship from the show and AT&T.
But the good news kept going pouring in, as the 18-year-old, who hopes to one day attend Yale or Brown, learned that Rep. Steve Israel has invited her to attend the President’s State of the Union address on January 24.
Israel told the NY Daily News Samantha is an inspiration and wants “her to be an example of perseverance in the face of adversity.”
However, he added that he another reason for extending the invitation.
“I think she will force everyone from the President to my colleagues to ask how it is that a middle-class family with a child who is a genius can fall into homelessness?
“This isn’t just patting ourselves on the back. It’s forcing some uncomfortable questions.”
Israel (D-Huntington), said he will definitely be informing the President of Garvey’s attendance.
Once the events have settled down, Samantha will continue her pursuit at the Intel Science Talent Search, where the winner will receive the $100,000 prize.
