The Chicago News Cooperative is reporting that Rep Luis Gutierrez ( D-Il) is expected to throw his support to Gery Chico for Chicago’s upcoming mayoral election.
Gutierrez is the most prominent Latino politician in IL and has been highly critical of rival Mayoral candidate Rahm Emanuel. Gutierrez blamed Emanuel, the former White House chief of staff, for the failure of immigration reform efforts. “I don’t believe that he has helped facilitate the process to get us to comprehensive immigration reform,” Gutierrez said of Emanuel in September.
Chico, is of Mexican, Lithuanian and Greek heritage. He will be looking to Gutierrez to help increase his vote total among Hispanics, who make up an estimate 27 percent of Chicago’s population and about 16 percent of registered voters.
Chico also has received endorsements from Latino aldermen Danny Solis (25th),Proco “Joe” Moreno (1st) and George Cardenas (12th), as well as former 1st Ward Ald. Manny Flores.
