Outfielder Jonny Gomes hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning to power the Boston Red Sox to a 4-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals, leaving the World Series tied at two games apiece.

The win ensures that the best-of-seven series will return to Boston for at least one more contest after Monday’s Game Five in St. Louis.

Gomes, who was added to the lineup less than an hour before the game after starter Shane Victorino experienced back problems, had gone hitless in the first three games of the Fall Classic.

The game was tied 1-1 with two Red Sox on base when Gomes came up to bat in the top of the sixth against Cards reliever Seth Maness and smacked a drive that sailed over the fence in left-center field.

“I just wanted an opportunity,” Gomes said after the game. “I take a lot of pride in my at-bats.”

David Ortiz went three-for-three, accounting for half the Red Sox hits and scoring two of the runs.

Big Papi also contributed to the vital Boston win with an impromptu dugout pep talk at the end of the fifth inning, Gomes said.

Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright will square off with Boston’s Jon Lester for Monday’s Game Five in St. Louis.
