King Juan Carlos on Tuesday welcomed former U.S. President Bill Clinton to Zarzuela Palace, where the pair discussed the economic outlook for Spain and the European Union.

Clinton, who arrived in Madrid on Monday evening, met with Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy before his appointment with the king.

The former president is visiting Spain to participate with Crown Prince Felipe in a forum on youth and employment organized by the Laureate International Universities network - which includes institutions from a score of countries and for which Clinton serves as honorary president - at the European University of Madrid campus.

The Laureate Summit on Youth and Employment began on Tuesday morning with the participation of noteworthy international personalities from the business, educational and institutional realms with an eye toward analyzing ways that governments, educators and business can work together to deal with high youth unemployment rates in EU nations.

Clinton last met with the Spanish monarch on Sept. 23, 2012, in New York, where Juan Carlos participated in the annual sessions of the Clinton Global Initiative, which attracted about 1,000 personalities and experts to discuss the great challenges facing the world.

At that meeting, Clinton and the king talked about the EU’s economic outlook and the former president told the monarch he was convinced that Spain has “enough strength” to overcome its current crisis.
