Former Mexican President Miguel de la Madrid is in “very serious” condition, but he “has not died,” contrary to reports from the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, President Felipe Calderon said.

“Important: I have just tried to again confirm the news and they have informed me that Miguel de la Madrid is in very serious condition, but he has not died,” Calderon said in a posting on Twitter.

“Miguel De La Madrid was seriously ill and taken to the hospital because of respiratory problems, but he has not died,” the president said on Saturday.

Speculation swirled on social-networking sites about the 77-year-old De la Madrid’s death, with numerous politicians, including Calderon, initially reporting that the former head of state had died.

“I deeply regret the death of former President Miguel De La Madrid. He dealt with great adversity. My deeply felt condolences go out to his family,” Calderon said in an earlier Twitter posting on Saturday.

“Mr. Miguel De la Madrid Hurtado, who was a great president of Mexico, has died and I express my condolences to his family,” PRI presidential candidate Enrique Peña Nieto said.
