Ethan Hawke will star in “Regression,” the new film by Oscar-winning Spanish director Alejandro Amenabar, the online edition of Variety magazine said.

Production of the film is planned to begin next spring.

FilmNation Entertainment will begin sales of international rights outside the United States and Spain next week at the American Film Market, the movie industry’s biggest trade fair.

Amenabar will get behind the cameras to direct this story based on his own screenplay.

The film will be produced by Fernando Bovaira through his MOD company, and by Amenabar through Himenoptero.

“Alejandro plays in ‘Regression’ with our deepest primal fears to make us feel once again both profoundly human and extremely vulnerable,” Bovaira told Variety.

FilmNation’s CEO, Glen Basner, said the “suspenseful and thrilling story, coupled with what we know will be a truly atmospheric setting, is going to be unforgettable for years to come.”

This year Hawke has starred in films as different one from another as “The Purge,” “Before Midnight” and “The Getaway.”

He recently wrapped a shoot of a modern adaptation of Shakespeare’s “Cymbeline,” directed by Michael Almereyda.

Amenabar, author of such works as “Thesis,” “Abre los Ojos,” “The Others” and “Agora,” saw his movie “The Sea Inside” win an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year.
