The ruling PLD party has proclaimed First Lady Margarita Cedeno de Fernandez as its vice presidential candidate for the next elections in 2012 when her husband’s term finishes.

Yesterday’s event took place in the Gran Arena del Cibao with thousands of party faithful in attendance, including President Leonel Fernandez and the PLD presidential candidate, Danilo Medina.

Medina gave the main address, stating that if he reaches the presidency, he will push for a new economic model for the country. He said that he chose Margarita as his running mate because she represents what Dominican society needs due to her sensitivity, her talent and her perseverance in the fight to improve the quality of life for Dominicans.

“We are happy because now a woman forms part of our presidential candidacy and I feel it is an act of justice for all Dominican women,” said Medina. He reiterated his intention to “do what has never been done” and he stressed that this means, among other things, “putting the fight against poverty at the center of economic policy.”

During his talk, the presidential candidate mentioned the name Margarita twelve times, listing her qualities and describing the social work carried out by the First Lady.
