In an effort to control garbage on the streets, and create civic awareness throughout the region, 140 cameras, used to monitor streets, have been installed in several Argentina neighborhoods, to spot people who go through trash to take recyclable materials, but discard non-recyclables on the streets or by the railroads. The cameras will also notify police of pedestrians crossing streets while on the phone.
Operators watching the cameras contact police immediately, and Citizen Protection or Urban hygiene personnel rapidly intervene.
“The idea is giving us excellent results, because [with every camera] we cover more city sectors” Said Andrés Petrillo, Secretary of Public services of San Martín “Thanks to this plan, we’ve mapped the problematic zones in our software.”
Petrillo said more than 70 fines for littering have been issued.
