The family of a Columbia University student it heartbroken after the 18-year-old allegedly jumped to her death.

On Monday, at around 11 p.m., Martha Corey-Ochoa is believed to have jumped from her 14th-floor dorm room. The Columbia freshman was dropped off at school earlier in the day and reportedly ‘looked a little sad when she was saying goodbye,’ her father told The Journal News.

Earlier this year, Corey-Ochoa graduated as valedictorian from Dobbs Ferry High School. She was a bright student who planned to take on two majors at Columbia, English and music. In her valedictorian speech, Corey-Ochoa quoted Shakespeare’s Othello.

Before we act, we must consider the consequences of our actions.

Monday evening, as Corey-Ochoa fell from her dorm’s ledge, her body hit a lower ledge and alerted another student. Her body was found on the sidewalk by a student with the track team. They alerted a doctor across the street at St. Luke’s Hospital, but she could not be resuscitated.

Her parents have since cleared out their daughter’s dorm room, her devastated father saying, ‘I feel like she was my life and, without her, my life seems to be gone. I don’t know what I’m doing now. We built our lives around her — and now she’s gone.’
