Blog del Narco: Michoacan Avocado Farmers Pay Millions Annually to Drug Cartels

Reportedly, drug cartels are charging local avocado farmers for planting, harvesting and marketing their locally grown products.  The spokesman for one of the largest organizations of Mexican farmers explains the critical path that avocado growers have to cross to overcome organized crime in order to have their product reach our tables.

Avocado growers charge that drug traffickers in Michoacan charge 225 million pesos ($17 Million US) a year to plant, harvest and market the avocados that reach thousands of households in Mexico and the United States. “Farmers have data that proves that 225 million pesos is the amount that has been extorted by the drug cartels in Michoacan,” said Alberto Galindo, spokesman for the Plan de Ayala National Movement, in an interview with 24 Hour National Coordinator.
