Four women were fatally shot in separate incidents in the northern city of San Pedro Sula, Honduran police said Friday.

All four of the victims were sex workers and the killings are thought to be drug-related, a police spokesman told reporters.

Three of the women were killed in the Concepcion neighborhood, while the fourth was slain in the El Polvorin district of San Pedro Sula, Honduras’ second city.

The deadly shootings occurred around 3:00 a.m. Friday, the police spokesman said.

Honduras suffered 85.5 homicides for every 100,000 residents in 2012, compared with a global median rate of 8.8 murders per 100,000, the Violence Observatory at the National Autonomous University said in a study released in February.
