Catholic Church Officials Reaching Out to Lawmakers Urging Passage of Immigration Reform

The U.S. Catholic Church launched Tuesday a campaign of contacts with federal lawmakers urging them to pass immigration reform, as part of its annual observance of National Migration Week.

The U.S. Catholic Bishops Conference considers that migrants, especially children, the undocumented, political refugees and victims of human trafficking, “often find themselves existing in a kind of figurative darkness where their options remain limited.”

Chile Supreme Court Ruling:  Former President Salvador Allende Killed Himself

The Supreme Court of Chile ruled Tuesday the dismissal of the investigation into the death of Salvador Allende on grounds that the socialist president took his own life as soldiers stormed the presidential palace during the military coup of Sept. 11, 1973.

The judges endorsed in full the findings issued in September 2012 by the Santiago Court of Appeals.

Puerto Rico Teachers Set to Strike Over Pension Benefit Cuts

Puerto Rico public school teachers have called a 48-hour strike starting Jan. 14, when classes resume, to protest the overhaul of their pension system.

The Broad Front in Defense of the Retirement System for Teachers, which gathers different unions and associations within the sector, on Tuesday approved the strike to force the government to back off the idea of revamping the pensions.

1. Pope Francis, shortly after being elected, took the bus with the other cardinals, and then circled back to the hotel where he had been staying to pay the bill.

2. He got a new (well, old) and adorable popemobile. The 1984 Renault was a gift from Father Renzo Zocca, and runs on biofuel.

Spanish Royal Family Shocker: Princess Cristina Charged with Tax Fraud and Money Laundering

A Spanish judge on Tuesday summoned Princess Cristina, the younger of King Juan Carlos’s two daughters, to appear for questioning on charges of tax fraud and money laundering.

The court appearance is set for March 8.

Actress and former Miss Venezuela Monica Spear Mootz and her husband were killed and their 5-year-old daughter was wounded in an armed robbery, authorities said Tuesday.

Spear, 29, and Irish spouse Thomas Henry Berry, 39, were found dead Monday night on a highway in the central state of Carabobo, the Venezuelan Attorney General’s Office said.

Through his Twitter account “UnOaxaca,” a Zeta drug cartel member published, on early Monday, a photograph of a group of toys that have been left by the cartel. The toys were in celebration of Three Kings Day.

The message read: “For the people to see that the Zetas Support noble people   Z “

As reported by the Oaxacan daily, cardboard boxes and shipments of toys appeared in the city of Viguera and in the colonias of Bougainvillea and Calicanta, which are considered to be areas of extreme poverty.

The undocumented attorney in whose favor the California Supreme Court ruled when he tried to obtain his professional license told Efe that his aspirations include becoming governor of the Golden State.

“I’m very happy that little by little people are seeing the reality and the value of what has been achieved,” said Sergio Perez Garcia a few hours after learning of the court’s ruling.

Cuba Welcomed Nearly 3 Million Tourists in 2013

Cuba closed 2013 having welcomed a total of 2.85 million foreign tourists, a new record but short of its goal of 3 million, the Tourism Ministry said Monday.

Last year closed with a growth of 0.5 percent over 2012, Communist Party daily Granma said, citing ministry marketing director Jose Manuel Bisbe.

Three Prisoners Found Dead in Acapulco Prison, Death Investigation Underway

Three inmates were found dead at a prison in Acapulco, a resort city on Mexico’s Pacific coast, prosecutors said.

The bodies were found on Monday and the cause of death is under investigation, the Guerrero state Attorney General’s Office said in a statement.

Tourists Rescued from Capsized Colombian Tour Boat

Colombian navy personnel rescued 20 tourists after their boat collided with another vessel, the military reported Monday.

The incident occurred in the Pacific waters of Buenaventura Bay, in Valle del Cauca province, the navy said in a communique.
