MEXICO NEWS: Household Income Grew 1.5 Perent from 2010-12

The incomes of Mexico’s 31.5 million households grew by 1.5 percent between 2010 and 2012, the National Statistics and Geography Institute, or Inegi, reported Tuesday.

Median quarterly household income increased from 33,746 pesos ($2,657) in 2010 to 38,125 pesos ($3,001) last year.

Authorities have impounded a North Korea-flagged ship found to be carrying weapons, Panamanian President Ricardo Martinelli said.

“The ship was on its way from Cuba to North Korea,” Martinelli told reporters, and indicated that “after removing the first layer” of sugar they found arms hidden in two containers.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announced Tuesday that he and long-time partner Cilia Flores were married in a private ceremony presided over by Caracas Mayor Jorge Rodriguez.

“I want to report that yesterday, July 15, Cilia and I legalized what already existed according to the laws of the Republic - we got married,” said Maduro at an official event broadcast on state television.

The Vancouver coroner has just announced the initial findings of the autopsy on ‘Glee’ star Cory Monteith.  The 31-year-old apparently died of a lethal combination of heroin and alcohol.

Montieth best known for his role as Finn Hudson was found dead at the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel on July 14 after missing his noon checkout time. The actor had checked into the hotel on July 6.

A lieutenant of Mexico’s most powerful drug boss was slain last week in this western city, the deputy attorney general of Sinaloa state, Martin Robles Armenta, said.

One of the two men fatally shot July 10 while sitting in their vehicle at a traffic light in Culiacan was identified as Alfredo Alvarez Zepeda, a subordinate of Sinaloa cartel chief Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, the deputy AG told a press conference.

An Indiana doctor has been arrested for his connection to a number of unsolved murders in Nebraska.

Dr. Anthony Garcia, 40, was arrested on Monday on suspicion of of killing Professor Roger Brumback and his wife, Mary, and Thomas Hunter, 11, and housekeeper, Shirlee Sherman.

With the death of Heriberto Lazcano Lazcano, “the Lazca”, leader of the criminal organization Los Zetas, the rise of Miguel Treviño Morales “Z-40” to the leadership of the group was imminent. The Cartels tentacles are expanded over much of the territory Mexican, South American and Central American countries.

The death of “The Lazca” by elements of the Navy in Progreso, Coahuila, paved the way for the reunification of the criminal organization under the command of one of its bloodiest leaders, who over 13 years has climbed the rankings in the underworld, leaving behind dozens of executions and authorship of various crimes and treason, for which he has earned the nickname “El Judas”.

Born November 18, 1970 in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Treviño Morales grew up in a large family in Dallas, Texas, where he began his criminal career at an early age and joined a gang in Texas, dedicated to theft and drug dealing in areas of high concentration of Hispanics in U.S. territory.

The U.S. government has issued a statement on the captures of Los Zeta’s chief Miguel Trevino Morales yesterday by the Mexican Navy:

The Drug Enforcement Administration congratulates the Government of Mexico on the arrest of Miguel Trevino Morales.  Trevino Morales, the head of the notoriously violent and vicious Los Zetas cartel, has been a wanted man for years. His ruthless leadership has now come to an end. 

Thanks to the brave men and women of the Government of Mexico, Trevino Morales will now be held accountable for his alleged crimes.

Trevino Morales is of one of the most significant Mexican cartel leaders to be apprehended in several years and DEA will continue to support the Government of Mexico as it forges ahead in disrupting and dismantling drug trafficking organizations.

States increased need-based grant aid to undergraduate students by 6 percent in the academic year 2011-2012, while total state financial aid to students grew by about 2 percent, according to an annual survey released Monday.

The survey, by the National Association of State Student Grant and Aid Programs, found that the states awarded $11.1 billion in student financial aid in 2011-2012, including loans and other aid, an increase of 1.8 percent from the previous year, adjusted for inflation.

Chilean health authorities tightened restrictions Monday on entering the northern town of La Tirana, which attracts big crowds every year for its principal religious feast day, in their effort to control an outbreak of swine flu in the area.

The number of fatalities from the AH1N1 flu virus remains at 35 nationwide and 12 in the Tarapaca region so far this year, out of a total of 430 cases confirmed across the country, Health Minister Jaime Mañalich said during a visit to a hospital in Iquique.

Security forces captured the leader of the ultraviolent Los Zetas drug cartel during an operation in the border city of Nuevo Laredo, the Mexican government said.

Miguel Angel Treviño Morales, alias “Z40,” was arrested in the early hours of Monday along with a bodyguard and the cartel’s money manager, federal security spokesman Eduardo Sanchez told a press conference in the capital.

Spanish soccer club Real Madrid is worth $3.3 billion, making it the most valuable sports franchise on the planet, Forbes magazine said Monday in its annual list.

“Los Merengues finished runner-up this year in La Liga and the Copa del Rey, but nab the title of the world’s most valuable sports team thanks to the highest revenues in sports ($650 million during the 2011-12 season),” the magazine said.
