Narco Blog: Rival Prison Group Opens Fire on Escaping Convicts in MX Jail

Last night was a riot inside the CERESO Municipal Jail in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua. Authorities confirmed that the uprising began at 09:20 pm and was over by 11:15 pm.

Reports said a group of prisoners attempted to escape the prison, but other inmates began to shoot at them. A shootout between the two groups of prisoners managed to halt the mass escape. In the end, at least 17 prisoners were killed; two more were wounded by gunfire.

Municipal Police, State Police, Federal Police and the Mexican Army, were all involved in the massive undertaking in order to gain control of the prison

It was necessary to explode several grenades in the effort to regain control.

It has just been reported that when authorities rushed to the scene. Leyzaola Julian, head of the Secretariat Municipal Public Safety, rushed to the prison as well. A mistake happened when a group of federal police shot the commanding officer who ran the prison.

The identities of the dead and wounded have not been released.
