Tax Preparers: Free Workshops on New IRS Rules Effecting You
Tax preparers across the country are struggling to find information about new IRS tax preparer regulations. But thanks to a series of free workshops offered by the National Board of Tax Practitioners (NBTP), preparers can finally get the facts they need to stay compliant with federal laws.
“The industry is changing, and the independent tax preparer needs to be proactive about making change as well,” says NBTP spokesman Sonia Mendoza. “These workshops are a simple, no-cost solution to several major problems preparers are facing.”
Among those problems is the fact that many independent tax preparers aren’t able to offer clients popular bank products, such as refund anticipation loans and electronic refund transfers. As a result, countless potential clients turn to national tax chains that do offer these services or do-it-yourself online filing websites.
Spanish-speaking practitioners are being hit particularly hard by the new IRS tax preparer registration requirements. Recent IRS communications and webinars have all been in English, with no information offered in alternative languages. A recent NBTP poll of 200 Spanish-speaking tax preparers found that only two were aware of the new IRS regulation. “That’s just plain scary,” says Mendoza. “The Hispanic population is the largest minority group in the United States, and this community relies on tax preparers to serve them in their native language.”
“Preparers across the country are understandably panicked by the lack of information,” Mendoza says. “Our workshops ease their minds by providing the facts they’re so desperately seeking.”
The first three dates were filled to capacity within days of their announcement, and the rest of the series is expected to fill up quickly as well. To enroll in one of the free NBTP workshops in English or Spanish, visit Taxpayer Workshop to find the city nearest you.
