Beauty and the Beast:  Penelope Cruz to Portray Donatella Versace for FX ‘American Crime Story’

Variety and others are reporting iconic Spanish beauty Penelope Cruz will portray Italian designer Donatella Versace in an upcoming season of ‘American Crime Story’ for the FX network.

The third installment of the popular cable mini-series will tell the story of the shocking murder of Gianni Versace, the founder of the Versace fashion house and older brother of Donatella, at the hands of serial murderer Andrew Cunanan.

Spaniards and Cruz’ legions of Latino fans are already shocked that the Academy award-winning actress has decided to do U.S. television at all, this is a first for her. The rest of the world is wondering how one of Maxim’s Most Beautiful Women is going to portray someone that looks how to say this politely – melted. And yes, Donatella was the same age Cruz is today, 42, when her brother was murdered but the pathological need to do facial alterations was already there along with the tanning addiction.

Versace, now 61, to put it kindly has an over-produced faced that is typically accompanied by street-walker couture though she is at the helm of one of the worlds’ most iconic fashion houses. Actually the true American Italian crime story here is how Donatella destroyed her natural beauty.

Cruz will join Venezuelan actor Edgar Ramirez who will portray Gianni Versace.

FX’s ‘American Crime Story’ delves into well-known crime stories for an entire season. The first season debuted with The People v O.J. Simpson’ and the second season will focus on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The People v O.J. Simpson series was highly acclaimed winning nine Emmy’s including Outstanding Limited Series.
