Clearly television networks are embracing immigrants, documented or undocumented, thanks to the lack of embracing being done by the current occupants of the White House. Several networks have recently announced projects centered on the immigrant experience.
ABC just announced a new comedy it is developing called Sanctuary Family centered on a couple who decides to provide sanctuary to their undocumented nanny and her family. The arrangement is fueled by the “empathetic” wife who must battle her not-so-empathetic husband. ABC is utilizing talent from other comedic shows like New Girl and 2 Broke Girls to develop the project.
ABC’s announcement comes on the heels of CBS’ announcement that several immigrant-centric projects are being developed by actress Gina Rodriguez for them. She is developing a dramedy titled Illegal that tells the story of a teenager brought to this country by her undocumented parents as an infant. This DREAMer has to not only deal with all the issues of being a teen but also living as an undocumented youth who knows no country except this one. Rodriguez is also developing Have Mercy – a TV series focused on the trials of a Latina doctor living in Miami after fleeing her country.
