The Week Cable TV Offended Hispanics - Well Maybe Just This Hispanic

The Week Cable TV Offended Hispanics - Well Maybe Just This Hispanic

This week CNN and Nickelodeon TV really gave me pause to question my undying love and addiction to cable TV, especially the type that is bland and mind numbing. It’s the kind of TV that you continue reading »

Rick Sanchez Maybe a Buffoon but He’s Our Buffoon

I have been quietly taking in the storm around our poor beleaguered Rick Sanchez - wait a minute I know he’s a buffoon but he’s our buffoon. continue reading »

Whose Bed Bugs Are More Bad Ass?

Whose Bed Bugs Are More Bad Ass?

Paying half attention to the news I keep hearing the words ‘plague’ ‘infestation’ ‘epidemic’ being mentioned so often, I half expect to see that the illegal anchor babies have indeed invaded the U.S. Capital or assume Glen Beck is talking about the Democrats again. Since Beck is now a man of God, the talk is all about minuscule size critters lovingly known as bed bugs or ‘chinches de cama’ in Spanish. continue reading »

Does Finding God on my iPhone Mean I Won’t Go to Hell?

As one of 33 million Catholic Latinos in the U.S. I am well versed on the rosary, novenas, penance and the versatile uses of holy water when one is in hot water. And as an American born and raised in this country I am also well versed in looking for ways to do things more efficiently and quickly. continue reading »

Overpriced Penis Pumps a Cautionary Tale for Hispanic Entrepreneurs

Overpriced Penis Pumps a Cautionary Tale for Hispanic Entrepreneurs

I am always on the prowl for positive news on Hispanics and Latin America and God knows we need it. It simply has been an awful week, what with rabid bats in Peru, dengue in Honduras, killer bees in Mexico and just outright killers throughout Mexico. State side we have J Lo banished from American Idol for diva-ness, feces flung at Tila Tequila and the Army aggressively recruiting Hispanics to be “All That You Can Be”. continue reading »

It’s a BAD Time to Be “MessyCon” or “Mexican” Says Mom

It’s a BAD Time to Be “MessyCon” or “Mexican” Says Mom

This weekend’s visit with mamita was rather painful. ¿Por Que? you ask. She was on a roll with another one of her paranoid monologues fueled by Geritol, gin and my Tia Lolita, hate monger extraordinaire, and needed to let me know once again: It’s a BAD time to be a “MessyCon” which is the English-is-not-your-first-language translation of Mexican. Ever since her beloved Senator ‘Mc Aint’ (ever going to be President) also known as Senator John McCain, Mexico-bashed and flipped-flopped and flopped-flipped on immigration, she became convinced all peoples hate Mexicans. continue reading »

Mad Mel, Minutemen and Immigration – Not a Movie Plot!!

Mad Mel, Minutemen and Immigration – Not a Movie Plot!!

When you hear the name Mel Gibson you think movie blockbuster, well OK maybe not anymore. What you don’t expect to hear, even in these Mel-is-a Maniac days is Mel, Minutemen and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the same breath. continue reading »

The Deafening Silence of Arizona Hispanics

Various polls have shown where the nation’s Hispanics stand and its not in support of SB 1070, approximately 70% are against it. Reason would follow that Arizona Hispanics, who would be the most likely stopped, questioned or detained, would be staggeringly in opposition. Not so. ¿Por Que? There is a reason why Arizona and Governor Jan Brewer did not appear worried that SB1070 would enrage the states Hispanic constituency, one of the larger in the U.S. Could it be because of the 1.9 million Arizona Hispanics, representing 30% of the population ONLY one-out-of-ten is a registered vote. How did these Arizonian Hispanics, half of which are foreign-born, sire a 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation that is incrementally in favor of SB1070? continue reading »

Are Track Suits Suitable for Dictators or Anyone Else for that Matter?

Are Track Suits Suitable for Dictators or Anyone Else for that Matter?

Just saw Fidel on TV and thought what in heaven’s name is going on with the tracksuits – Chinese imports I suppose since the U.S. embargo cut him off ages ago. ¿Por Que? Why, no snappy Under Armour or Juicy Couture Chinese knock-offs, to embrace his feminine side. Poor thing, I am pleased he is at least wearing age appropriate senior citizen attire but a blue, gnarly, rayon track suit for the last demi-god, dictator of North American? continue reading »

Entrepreneurs Cashing In on “Lets Catch Us an Illegal” Bandwagon

They say desperation is the mother of all invention and clearly 26 year-old Houston web designer, George O’Brien was desperate to figure out how to identify illegal aliens. So much so that he has launched www.IllegalAlienReport.com commenting. continue reading »

Salute to Santos Merendon A Most Unlikely American

The call came yesterday; my padrino Santos had passed away after a valiant battle with cancer. This very proud, quiet and dignified man had come to the end of his road and I was saying good-bye to the first entrepreneur I had ever known, a distinction I don’t think he quit understood. continue reading »

Feliz Víspera de Todos Los Santos, a.k.a. HAPPY HALLOWEEN

It is time for new costumes at the Walgreen household; we have been living with the Disney costumes for far too long. There appears to be an interest in vampires and outer space aliens, my young children are convinced they need to belong to another world not the dictatorship known as mom’s house. Low and behold what do I find on line, continue reading »

Alberto Needs A New Padrino!

Living High WITH the Hogs!

Excitement surged when I heard that the high-heeled and the well heeded where being sought out to share personal thoughts and insights for this premiere issue of Michigan Avenue. I anxiously awaited my call. Yes, the tiara of the high life was a bit tarnished and gathering dust out here in the North Shore but still faintly glittered with memories of fabled fete’s and fast travels. continue reading »
