Today in 1971 U.S. Senator and former presidential candidate Marco Rubio was born in Miami, Florida.
This ambitious son of Cuban immigrants was born to serve. Shortly after graduating law school he entered local Miami politics as a City Commissioner in 1996 and then state politics in 2000 as a Republican State Representative. Rubio was not satisfied with state politics and launched his victorious U.S. senate campaign as a Republican in 2009.
Rubio has many admirers as well as detractors – his ardent critics think he is too ambitious and is always looking for the next best office. He was still the junior senator from Florida when four years after taking his U.S. Senate seat he announced his presidential campaign. Critics claim Rubio was running for president when he was City Commissioner.
This 2016 presidential election was not meant to be Rubio’s time, the voters weren’t interested in a polished, life-long politico. Rubio reclaimed his senate seat again and as he says the rest is in “God’s hands.”
