Hispanic Standout:  Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Political Newbie and Latina Disruptor

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

How the HELL did a New York bartender and political newbie pull off the most jaw dropping political upset of the year and one that is sure to send President Trump for a late night run at McDonald’s?

But Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez did just that, she whupped political primary ass by defeating long-time Democratic Congressional incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley – a 10-time incumbent. 28-year-old Ocasio-Cortez will now face her Republican opponent, Anthony Papas, in November where she is expected to easily win in the Democratic haven of the 14th Congressional District encompassing the east Bronx.

What makes this political upset (16 percentage point victory) so unlikely is Ocasio-Cortez herself. She was underfunded, unknown and a Socialist and worse for some a die-hard Bernie Sanders supporter. WTF a Democratic Socialist who endorses abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement and free-tuition garners 58 percent of the vote against a NY political powerhouse!!

This daughter of a Puerto Rican housekeeper handily defeated Rep. Crowley who has been in office since 1999, is a Democratic Caucus leader and was rumored to be the next Speaker succeeding Nancy Pelosi.

Ocasio-Cortez is a Boston University grad who until several months ago was a bartender by day and a community organizer by night. She worked on the Bernie Sanders campaign and once worked for Senator Ted Kennedy. Going into this campaign as a clear underdog, Ocasio-Cortez always thought she was a better representative of the now very diverse 14th Congressional district: brown Latino female.

Today this rising Latina powerhouse is savoring her upset and looking forward to becoming the youngest member of Congress if elected.
