Mexico’s PRI Party Selects New Leader- Humberto Moreria
Mexico’s main opposition party has selected it new leader ahead of next year’s presidential election.
Humberto Moreria was selected on Saturday to lead the PRI. Moreria will work with Congresswoman Cristina Diaz, who was elected the PRI’s secretary-general. The two politicians were the only candidates in the internal election.
In 1929, the National Mexican Party (PNM) was formed by the president, General Plutarco Elías Calles. Later renamed the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), the new party ruled Mexico for the rest of the 20th century.
The PRI lost control to the National Action Party or PAN led by Vicente Fox in 2000. Effectively bringing to a close the 71 years of single party rule in Mexico.
“For many years, our party had not been able to achieve unity in changing the national leadership,” Moreira said.
“We are united because Mexico comes first, because we cannot stand around with our arms crossed in the face of the critical situation the country is going through and because we want to win, and we will,” Moreira, who takes over for Beatriz Paredes, said.
