The community of Chumbivilcas, a province located Southeast of Cuzco, Peru maintains a very peculiar end of the year tradition.
Before the arrival of the New Year, villagers hold a punch off, in order to release tensions, settle scores and hammer out any personal problems that might have built up among them over the year.
Participants punch away their personal problems and after the fight, the contenders become friends. At the end of the day, the entire community celebrates with a dance, there are no grudges.
Men, women and children participate in the fist fighting festivities known as Takanakuy, where despite the brutal look of it, serious injuries rarely happen.
