Today in 2015, Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman known to the U.S. government as the head of the Sinaloa cartel escaped from a supposedly maximum security Mexican prison making prison escape history. This being Guzman’s second prison escape the first escape from the Puente Grande prison came thanks to a laundry basket and lots of bribes.
The second escape in 2015 was on a customized motorcycle through a 5,000-foot tunnel hidden behind the shower inside El Chapo’s cell in the Altiplano prison, located 55 miles west of Mexico City.
It was this escape that solidified the mystic and power of the 5’5 narco kingpin. The son of petty thieves from Badiraguato, Sinaloa had not only made it to Forbes’ list of billionaires but he was now internationally infamous and down-right legendary in Mexico,
Alas, freedom was short lived for Guzman thanks to the temptress Kate del Castillo and the actor acting as a journalist Sean Penn. El Chapo was captured in January 2016 shortly after meeting with El Castillo and Penn to discuss a bio-pic on his life. After the capture of Guzman in Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Guzman was extradited the following year to a U.S. prison (and now his current home) in January, 2017. His 200 days of the lam were the last days of fresh air for the Forbes-certified billionaire who now lives in solitary confinement.
