Two well-known Mexican bodybuilders were executed after working out in front of their gym in Córdoba, Veracruz. Iliana Mendoza Sanchez, 20-years-old, a nationally ranked bodybuilding champion and her bodybuilding companion 22-year-old Jorge Avalos Calvo were both shot at close range by two masked individuals on a motorcycle the night of Wednesday, March 8. The young victims later died at a local hospital.
Cordoba is in the center of this southern Mexican state that has been plagued by rampant violence. And its former governor Javier Duarte is a current fugitive from justice wanted for his tied to cartels and corruption.
Mexican authorities believe Avalos Calva was the intended victim. The award winning body builder is the nephew of the murdered former head of Los Zetas in Cordoba. Los Zetas are battling with the Jalisco New Generation Cartel for control of the entire state of Veracruz.
Apparently the young bodybuilder had tied to Los Zetas through relatives and was a low level drug trafficker himself, a route many youth take if they cannot obtain a job. Unfortunately for Mendoza Sanchez she was at the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong man.
