Damaso Lopez Nunez, admiringly nicknamed ‘El Liceniado’ (the Graduate) is a man of many talents: politician, prison warden, narco kingpin, and El Chapo’s right handman. Tomorrow however he faces a U.S. judge in Virginia, after being extradited from Juarez, Mexico last week, to talk about his narco career and dealings with the Sinaloa cartel.
The once confidant and CEO successor of Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman is in the U.S. to face a one-count indictment alleging that between 2003 and December 2016 he conspired to distribute cocaine and money launder. Or is he?
The 52-year-old Nunez Lopez is said to be here to rat out his former boss, the very man he helped escape from prison in 2001 in a laundry basket. Mexico’s Acting Attorney General Alberto Elias Beltrain said El Liceniado is “potentially a key witness” against Guzman, who has been in U.S. custody since 2017.
Lopez Nunez for sure knows a lot. Having worked alongside El Chapo for nearly 15 years and given rein of the Sinaloa Cartel when Guzman was jailed in 2014. Then Lopez Nunez got greedy and tried to off Guzman’s sons and take the entire cartel operation for himself. Then he went completely power hunger apparently allying with the Jalisco cartel, to help in his war against his former boss.
The U.S. government needs to determine if Lopez Nunez’ true value is as an informant or better yet as a finder of El Chapo’ “missing” billions or if he is to face justice for his own crimes.
