U.S. Representative Luis V. Gutierrez, the long-standing immigrant advocate and at times lone voice for the undocumented, once again issued a “call to action” in defense of DACA youth. The head of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus warned the undocumented to expect the worse from the current administration under President Donald Trump. The warning was especially focused to the 800,000 immigrant youth thought to be safe from deportation due to their participation in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
The DACA program is facing court challenges and is not expected to be protected under the Trump administration. There have already been isolated incidents where DACA youth have been deported.
The video shows Gutierrez, a Democratic Congressman from Illinois, urging for the continuation of the DACA program as well as the special “Temporary Protected Status” protecting 400,000 individuals from returning to their countries due to violence and strife.
Gutierrez called all activists of all causes to help protect the currently documented from becoming undocumented under the Trump administration and noted:
“Fighting for DACA and fighting to keep millions of people in this country who have put down roots and built lives here is going to be a people’s fight. And the effort to find ways to protect families and cope with more than a million people being pushed into the black market requires us to organize in every community.”
