Prosecutor: Fight Over Unpaid Rent Led to Attempted Murder of Landlord

Though Oscar Hernandez has no apparent criminal record, he is currently being charged with attempted murder for allegedly slicing his landlord’s through over a rent payment dispute.

The 22-year-old is accused of trying to murder his 42-year-old landlord on Friday outside of the apartment Hernandez was renting.

Prosecutors say Hernandez gave a statement to police admitting he cut his landlord’s throat, though his attorney, Charles Lauer, argues Hernandez was coerced into making a statement.

Hernandez has never been in trouble with the police and has run the Chicago Marathon three times.

According to police reports, Hernandez and the landlord began fighting outside and Hernandez, “armed with a knife, cut the victim’s throat and stabbed him about the body and hands.”

When he appeared in front of a judge on Sunday with bandages on his fingers, and with his family seated behind him, heard his bail set at $500,000.

The landlord remains in the hospital after needing 30 stitches in his neck.
