Pilsen Car Crash Injures 5
A motorist was charged with DUI following an early Saturday crash that left five people seriously injured in the Pilsen neighborhood.
An EMS Plan I, which sends at least five ambulances to the scene, was called about 3:35 a.m. for the two-car crash at South Damen Avenue and West 18th Street.
A woman was driving a Ford Expedition sport-utility vehicle eastbound on 18th Street when the vehicle struck a westbound Dodge Stratus, police News Affairs Officer Michael Fitzpatrick said.
The woman was not hospitalized, but was taken into custody following the accident, Fitzpatrick said.
Nidia Mejia, 23, of the 4700 block of South California Avenue, was charged with misdemeanor DUI, negligent driving and driving on a suspended license, police News Affairs Office Anne Dwyer said.
The scene was secured just before 4 a.m. according to a Chicago Fire Department spokesman.
Five people, all in serious to critical condition, were taken to hospitals from the crash, according to the spokesman.
