New St. Anthony’s Hospital in the Works
St. Anthony’s Hospital is looking to avoid joining the 20 Chicago hospitals that have closed over the last 30 years, and is instead hoping to build a new $250 million campus at the former site of the Washburne Trade School.
If he hospital would replace the 200-bed facility a 19th and Sacramento that almost closed its doors three years ago. Wednesday, at the City Council meeting, developers presented plans for the campus which would reside at 31st and Kedzie.
The new St. Anthony’s Hospital, aside from being a “regular” hospital would have a multi-purpose community center, fitness center, day care and recreational programs for over 500,000 residents in the North Lawndale, Little Village, Pilsen, Brighton Park, McKinley Park, and Back of the Yards neighborhoods.
In addition, the proposed site, in partnership with the Chicago Park District, would provide the area with more green space. Ald. Ricardo Munoz is backing the proposal, and says a park is desperately needed in the area.
“It’s a great public-private partnership between the Chicago Park District, the Board of Ed, and St. Anthony Hospital to turn a dilapidated, 11-acre site that’s been an eyesore for well over ten years into a productive community partner,” said Munoz.
Once financial logistics are worked out, construction should begin in 2013, and is expected to finish in 2016.
