Mole de Mayo - Pilsen Cook Off TODAY
Continue your Cinco de Mayo celebration at the Mole de Mayo festival! We would like to extend an invitation to one and all to join us for the third annual Mole cook-off in Chicago’s beautiful Pilsen neighborhood.
Mole (pronounced moe-lay) is a traditional Mexican sauce, typically made of chiles, nuts, spices, chocolate and seasonings. Served with chicken or, on enchiladas, this dish i…s a staple in most Mexican households. Mole originates from the Puebla region of Mexico, where the Batalla de Puebla was won on May 5th, making Cinco de Mayo an important date in Mexican history.
This event will occur on Saturday, May 7, 2011 beginning at 10:00am, lasting until 8:00pm with at least 8 chefs competing their own mole recipes for one of two awards; either the official over-all winner of the Mole Cook-Off or the People’s Choice Award. Concurrent to the Mole Cook-Off, an market will feature local Pilsen vendors.
Entertainment will include various traditional Mexican music including Mariachis performing at various times throughout the day and traditional Lucha Libre wrestlers. We will to offer traditional Mexican alcoholic beverages (micheladas, sangria) as an option to attendees. This event is being hosted by Eighteenth Street Development Corporation (ESDC), a 501(c) 3 non-profit organization.
El Zocalo: Located South of 18th Street on Paulina Ave. El Zocalo serves as a Mexican-style town plaza, a site for community events and opportunities for vendors. It is conveniently located across from the CTA’s Pink Line-18th Street station.
