HISTORY: Happy Birthday von Humboldt
Alexander von Humboldt, a German naturalists and explorer, turned 241 on Sunday.
Humboldt Park named after the explorer, is not only the name of the actual park, but also refers to the northwest community area of Chicago.
A great representative of German heritage, Humboldt, is less remembered than he once was, but parks, counties, a streets across the U.S. carry his name.
At Tower Grove Park in the area, Humboldt’s birthday celebration was carried out at the 11 foot statue of his likeness.
Humboldt is best known for his attempt to sum up all human knowledge in his five-volume book, “Cosmos.”
