CRIME: Boy, 15, Fatally Shot on His Birthday
A 15-year-old boy is dead after being shot in the front yard of a home Monday night.
Jovany Diaz was celebrating his 15th birthday with a cousin,19, in the front yard of a home of the 4300 block of West Hirsch Street in Chicago’s West Humboldt Park neighborhood around 10 p.m. when an unidentified gunman crossed the street, and coming towards the boys, opened fire.
Police say Diaz received a gunshot wound to the chest and his cousin took one to the right hand. Diaz was rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, and was pronounced dead at 10:46 p.m. His cousin was treated at a local hospital and released.
Few details are available about the gunman, but they say a gray or silver vehicle was seen fleeing the scene.
The 6-foot-tall freshman went to Amundsen High School, and played basketball for the school’s freshman team.
“His drug was sports,” his sister Maritza Rodriguez told reporters. “The streets for him was basketball.” Rodriguez is the oldest (25) of the six siblings.
So far, so arrests have been made.
