CPS Goes Back on Word, Whittier School Sit-in Begins Again
Last year, parents of Whittier Elementary School students fought to save a fieldhouse on the school’s property. After a month-long battle with the Chicago Public Schools board, the parents and CPS reached an agreement and the parents were set to get when they wanted when they began their sit-in last year, a library.
However, new schools CEO Jean-Claude Brizard, appears to have gone back on that agreement, and reportedly arranged for a demolition crew to take down the building, instead, putting a library inside the already crowded school, and moving a teacher out of a classroom. Now, it appears the sit-in has begun once more, as parents are once again occupying the fieldhouse to prevent it from being torn down.
The demolition was scheduled to start on Monday, but was delayed by the rain. Wednesday, reports were coming in via Twitter that the demolition crew had arrived at the school.
