COMMUNITY: (Logan Square) Orchard Project to be Completed Soon
Along the Blue Line at Milwaukee and Logan Boulevard there currently lays food wrappers, tires, paper, graffiti and other discarded junk, but a single sign gives the neighborhood hope for the future of the site.
“Future Sight of Community Open Space” reads the sign in the West Side neighborhood. The 65,000 residents of the area known for its historic boulevards will soon see green.
In early 2011 the one-third acre Logan Square site, according to Seeding Chicago, “will become home to the world’s first urban orchard and open plaza dedicated to growing rare fruit varieties such as apples, pears, cherries, paw paws and medlars (deciduous European tree having white flowers and edible apple-shaped fruit).”
