City Beaches Closed Due to Fog - Check Today if Reopened
All but one of the city of Chicago’s beaches were closed today due to the poor visibility from the low laying fog. The only beach open to swimmers was the 12th Street beach. City beaches were technically opened but no one was allowed to enter the water to swim. The low laying fog caused by the extreme heat makes it difficult for life guards to see who is in the water and what is happening, therefore making it an unsafe situation.
The poor visibility lasted until late afternoon but the excessive heat is expected to remain through Thursday.
Chicago beaches are open from 11 am - 7 pm and select beaches (Leone, Montrose, North Ave., 31st Street, 41st Street, South Shore and Calumet) open at 9:30 a.m. To confirm that any of these beaches will be accessible to swimmers you can call (312) 74-BEACH or text the name of your local beach to (312) 715-SWIM.
