Chico Resigns to Focus on Mayoral Campaign
Gery Chico has resigned from his position as City Colleges Chairman to concentrate on his mayoral campaign. If the City Colleges Board approves of the choice, Mayor Daley will replace Chico with Hispanic businessman Martin Cabrera Jr..
In a press release announcing Chico’s replacement, Mayor Daley said, “I believe that Martin Cabrera brings a great perspective and the leadership and management experience needed to implement the reinvention plan that [Chancellor] Cheryl Hyman and Gery Chico have been working to develop. The mission of Chicago City Colleges must be updated to meet the economic challenges of today and tomorrow. Martin has the financial background and expertise to do that.”
Daley created the Hyman/Chico team in March, and almost immediately they were making drastic changes to “reinvent” a system with declining funding and bulging enrollment.
