Alderman Agree on New Map, 13 Latino-Majority Wards

Despite objections from Ald. Roderick Sawyer of Chicago’s 6th district, a new ward map was approved in a 41-8 vote.

The new map creates 13 Latino-Majority wards, with 2 being near majority, but Ald. Sawyer claims the map “only benefits a few self-serving Alderman, not the City of Chicago.”

The Black Caucus lost two majorty African-American wards, and now has total of 18. The most recent census counted 181,000 fewer African-Americans in the city, while it showed an increase of 25,000 Hispanics.

There are currently 8 Hispanic aldermen, including 26th Ward Alderman Roberto Maldonado who was pleased with the approved map.

Maldonado told Fox News Chicago, ““I think we’re going to have an opportunity to keep adding more Latinos to the City Council.”
