Dr. Antonia Novello, has always lived by her motto “Service is the rent you pay for living, and that service is what sets you apart” and her service to public health care has set her apart and made her a ground-breaker. She is a ground-breaker at so many levels to recognize her only by her most elevated title; U.S. Surgeon General is not enough. Before becoming the 1st woman and the 1st Hispanic in that role she had already made a name for herself in public health policy, as a two-star Rear Admiral in the U.S. Public Health Service agency. continue reading »

Carlos Augusto Alves Santana was born July 20, 1947 in Autlán de Navarro, Jalisco, Mexico. Young Carlos learned to play the violin at age five and the guitar at age eight from his father who was a Mariachi Violinist. His family eventually made their way to San Francisco where he graduated high school. After several years spent working as a dishwasher in a diner, Santana decided to become a full-time musician; in 1966, he formed the Santana Blues Band. continue reading »
